what's so civil about war anyway?
Jeez... watched a documentary about the nukes dropped on Japan tonight. Cried about four times, and just stared in horror for a lot of the rest. Words completely fail me :(

I had been reconsidering my stance on non-violence a LITTLE recently; thinking that maybe it wouldn't be so bad to learn something like Aikido (the supposedly "non-violent" martial art, purely for defense). Watching that documentary knocked any such silly ideas right out of me, thankfully.

So I found a free Yoga video online instead; something else I've been considering lately. I do need to start regular exercise again, just to keep myself in shape, and I didn't want to resume the martial arts exercises that I learnt in the past, even if only doing the warm-up parts of that practice. So yoga will hopefully be a nice alternative, and much more interesting to me, too :)

I finally took the plunge, and have been watching the new Stargate SG1 Season 9 and Atlantis Season 2 (also a tiny bit of BSG Season 2). All going in interesting new directions, which holds lots of promise for entertainment value :)

I applied for a course recently... one I inquired about over a year ago, and just got contacted about last week. That would give me four different qualifications -- Microsoft administration and such -- in one go, so if they think I qualify, it'll be pretty handy. Also, it's in the same area as my local meditation centre, which I hadn't managed to prioritise for its own sake, so being in the area anyway would help there :)

Work-wise, I've been happily working with Python again, doing more work on my plugin for Inkscape. I also have a basically functional Jabber-based Livehelp client, which I'm working on building into a full livehelp webapp.

Oh, gotta go get my car's battery off charge, before it's too dark to see out there.

Have to admit, I purposely avoided the Hiroshama programme tonight :'(
It can quite simply never be justified; absolutely horrendous stuff.
That course sounds pretty good! Good luck with that! I was wondering if you'd still been attending the meditation centre; certainly would be handy if it was nearby where you were studying.

Yeah, it seemed like they were trying to justify it in places. Somehow the "just doing my job" excuse from a bomber pilot doesn't quite balance against the story of a man bowing over and over to the person who found his son admist the carnage, though :(

I saw a programme about what happened after Pearl Harbour on the History Channel a few months back, and I'd previously had no idea quite how horrific all the attacks on Japan were. The reaction was waaaay out of proportion. The deaths of so many innocent citizens. Quite sickening :(

That program sounds interesting. I've seen quite a few on them. Coming from the Country that did that I must say the choice of targets were inexcusable.

While I find your non-violence admirable, and not wrong, I do think that it would not be a bad idea to learn how to defend yourself. To think that the circle of violence is an immutable thing, and that violence is always wrong seems fairly mypoic to me. Not that I'm going around saying let's cause havoc, but even the mouse fights back when it needs to.

Well, I never said that I need to learn how to defend myself, exactly. I was never bad at fighting, and I've done martial arts too. What I need to learn is self-defense that doesn't reduce me to the level of the attacker, which I don't believe martial arts has helped with.

I LOVE yoga - it's physically very rewarding - and there are some postures that lend to great moments of meditation - fortunately I have an instructor that really accentuates the spiritual aspect and we end with deep relaxation/breathing - followed by some chanting.

i don't think that there's a certain type of martial arts that will bring you to the level of an attacker because of who you are. martial arts can be used to stay healthy, fit and to defend the weak or hurt the weak depending on the person using it. the art itself isn't bad per say, it just more so depends on the user. but that's just my point of view.
yoga though is pretty cool, very calming. i enjoyed it as it helped to relieve some stress from my classes.
